Used ATV Prices: What to consider when determining price.

Used ATV prices vary widely. So what is the main criterion for determining what your ATV is worth? The answer is not as simple as you might think.

One of the first things to consider when valuing an ATV is its age. As we all know, when looking at items for sale, its age is a vital part of determining its value. In the ATV world, older "classic" models really don't exist. This is typically true of most ATVs because there is no reason to buy a old machine that isn't going to perform like a current model will.

After age is condition. The condition of your ATV is going to have a huge impact on its current market value. This is where you taking care of your equipment will really pay dividends. The only thing separating a crappy, beat-up machine and one that is still looking good and pulling strong is the way that the owner took care of it.

Maintenance is a broad term. So if you take care of your equipment in terms of regular oil changes and filter changes, then it is a good idea to keep a little notepad where you write down your maintenance log. I know this is unlikely, but it might allow you to sell your machine over someone else's for a few more bucks.

The other thing is that if you are buying a used machine from someone that has records, then it will show you that they are willing to take care of their equipment.

Although you won't see this in a value calculation—a clean machine will be an easier machine to both sell and buy. We all use our ATVs in the dirt and mud, but when we are selling or buying then we don't want to be looking at a machine covered in dirt from last weekend’s adventure. Used ATV prices are guidelines, and if you can make your machine stand out over others, then why not?

This serves many purposes. In addition to being able to carefully see and inspect all the working components, it also allows for a careful inspection of frame and suspension components for cracks and bending. This gives the potential buyer confidence that they are not buying a tweaked machine.
