Police Motorcycle Helmets:
Tips for Choosing the Best One

Police motorcycle helmets are not recreational helmets. These helmets provide the law enforcement community with a comfortable, durable tool.

Police helmets are worn for extended shifts, so comfort is important. There are several key things to look for in terms of comfort.

The first consideration is the way the helmet fits. Most duty helmets allow wider dimensions to provide a snug but comfortable fit.

The interior lining is another area to look at. The ability to easily remove and wash the liner is very important. As we all know, it gets hot when we ride. The liner of our helmets absorbs all the sweat from our head. Wearing one everyday in a professional application really stresses the importance of liner washability.

Police helmets should also provide a good airflow system to help aid in comfort and coolness. The better helmets have a non-intrusive air flow system incorporated into them. These systems direct cool outside air through ducts in the helmet.

This cooler air flows through the helmet around your head and then exits through the back of the helmet. These vents are designed to provide a constant airflow that aids in heat dissipation.

Protection, of course, is the most important factor. Quality police helmets utilize a rugged multi-layer Kevlar/fiberglass shell that meets or exceeds FMVSS218-DOT requirements.

Finally, is the ability of the helmet to easily and effectively incorporate your communication needs. Many agencies utilize several different types of communication systems. Before buying a helmet make sure it will accommodate your department's communications needs.
