Tank bags offer us extra storage. We all find that we need extra room for gear on road trips. After we put a nice set of saddle bags on the back of our bikes, the next addition is a set of motorcycle tank bags.

The biggest problem with tank bags is their ability to scratch the paint on our gas tanks. Most high quality tank bags incorporate a special padding between the bags and the tank.

Whenever we attach anything to our paint there is always the risk of damaging the paint. It doesn't matter if we are talking about tank bags or saddle bags, they both rub on painted surfaces.

Dirt and road debris usually get caught between the bags and the bike and this just speeds up the process.

There are a couple of things that you can do to help prevent damage. When you are selecting the bags make sure that the surface that is coming in contact with your bike is free and clear of abrasive surfaces that can mar the paint.

One of the most common types of bags is magnetic. These bags are great if you have a metal fuel tank. Again, the best way to avoid damage with these bags is to keep the surface between the bags and tank clear of debris.

The correct way to mount these bags is to hold the "ears" up away from the tank. Position the bags as desired and then lay the ears down into place.

NEVER put your bags on the tank and then start moving them around for adjustment. This is guaranteed to scratch your paint.

The best way to protect your paint against scratching is to prevent direct contact between your tank and your tank bags. There is an affordable, easy solution.

The solution is the readily-available material sold to line utensil/tool drawers. This rubbery mesh allows the magnets to securely attach the tank bags to the bike, while affording a layer of protection for the paint.

This material is readily (and cheaply) available. The best way to go is to cut a template that covers the bottom of the bags. Simply insert this template between bags and tank and avoid scratches.
