Motorcycle sprockets: What's the best set for you?

Ready to buy a good set of motorcycle sprockets? This site offers a good selection AND prices.

If you want to learn more before you buy, read on!

Your sprockets and chain are a critical part of your bike's performance. There are several things to consider when purchasing a new set of sprockets.

One of the first things to consider is your type of riding. Do you need an ultra-trick set of lightweight sprockets to get that extra tick of time on track day?

If this is the case, try to talk to some of the folks at your local track to find out the hottest setup for your bike. Usually they can give you a good starting point. It is much smarter to learn from others, and buy the right sprockets the first time.

If you ride off-road then give careful attention to the tooth count (gearing) when riding in your favorite area. If you're climbing long twisties then you'd prefer a larger gear with more low-end and less top speed.

If, on the other hand, you are doing flat-out desert riding then you'd probably go with a smaller sprocket to increase your top speed.

For street riders/cruisers, usually the stock sprockets is the best overall setup. Most manufacturers run the bikes through a comprehensive testing program that yields the best gearing for all-around use.

A couple of things to keep in mind when getting sprockets will help them last much longer. Firstly, always get a complete set of sprockets-rear and front. The two wear together (along with the chain) and so when replacing one be sure to replace the other.

Secondly, always replace the chain when your replacing your sprockets. Bike chains come in a ton of different strengths and styles. Make sure you get the recommended one for your bike and riding application.

Most street bikes use o-ring or x-ring chains. These chains seal in the lubricant and repel dirt and debris. This makes for much longer chain life.
