Tips to Consider Before You Buy
We've lived in upstate New York for many years, and the winters are long and snowy. So as we have gone through winter after winter, we have tried many ways to move snow. Our quad has had snow plows on the front and straight blades on the back and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. A friend recently bought a new ATV snow blower for his quad and allowed us to do some research on what he thought of it. First things first, it was not cheap. He could not find one at the local shops, so he had to get it shipped to him. Initially, the company was going to charge him a couple of hundred bucks to have the thing delivered via a private carrier (it was too big for UPS). After some wrangling, he was able to get a deal where he would go to one of their distributors a few towns over and pick it up for free. After he got it home and unpacked, he needed to do a small amount of fiddling to get everything right for his ATV and then attached the blower. One of the first things he noticed was its weight. When he compared it to the plow, he just removed he realized it was quite a bit heavier. He has a good size utility-type quad so it wasn't that big of a deal, but it is definitely something to consider. Well, after the next storm it was time to test it out. He was using it on a paved surface out in front of his garage. It worked very well. It easily moved the 9 inches of fresh snow without any problems. One of the biggest advantages was that it was able to move the snow far enough away to avoid massive piles that would have become frozen chunks of ice that would have been around 'til spring. This was one of the reasons he tried out the blower over a plow. Now here is the downside. As the winter wears on, he is discovering that it is not happy when it hits ice chunks hidden in a snow bank. There are always going to be a few frozen chunks lurking in your snow banks. After hitting a real whopper, he sheared off a shear pin (i.e., it did what it was supposed to do). This seems to be his only complaint. What he does now is use the blower with fresh snow to move everything well clear and then he uses a plow or tractor bucket when he has to move old or frozen banks. This puts less stress on the machine and still allows him to start with plenty of space.
