ATV Battery: Tips on the BEST prices, plus replacement and keeping your current one going.

An ATV battery is one of the most common things that need replacing on your ATV. There are a lot of reasons that these seem to wear out before other components.

We've found a site that provides great prices on an ATV battery. This site also carries the "Battery Tender," which we'll discuss later.

One of the biggest reasons is lack of use. Unfortunately, the majority of people can't use our ATVs everyday. This means that the machine is going to sit more than it is used. The battery is going to naturally be drawn down just by inactivity. This is accelerated when you store the ATV in a cold climate.

When storing in a cold climate, it becomes even more important that you make sure that you disconnect the battery. The best thing to do is to remove the battery from your machine and stick it in a warm storage area like your heated laundry room.

The battery is going to give you a lot more service if you don't let it get completely discharged. The battery is constantly going through charging when in use. When you store it, this stops. When it completely discharges, it becomes less efficient at accepting a full recharge. This occurs in all batteries and will quickly diminish the usefulness and longevity of your battery.

There are several things available to help prevent the slow discharge of your battery when not in use. One of the most common products is the "Battery Tender."

This unit plugs into a regular household outlet and provides a trickle charge to your battery only when it needs it. In contrast to just hooking your battery up to a regular battery charger that does a consistent recharge, the battery tender senses when your battery is reaching a state of discharge and then kicks on. It also then senses when the battery has reached an acceptable charge level and then shuts off--automatically.

This is a great little unit for all of your equipment that doesn't get regular use. It quickly pays for itself by saving you needing to buy new batteries.
